More exclusive than exclusive

10.23.2008 • Posted by: David

A few weeks ago we put together some customs for our man Jeff from All City. They feature the Handspun exclusive B/W checkerboard Velocity Deep V rims, laced 3x on All City hubs, with DT Competition spokes. Why yes, they are tied and soldered, making them even more durable and so very exclusive. Currently we are only offering the B/W checkerboards as complete wheels (WE7077 & WE7076), but they will be available for custom builds shortly.  After getting his hands on such a hot pair of wheels Jeff did the only logical thing and immediately took them camping:

…and here’s a shot of the bike in its natural environment:

What happens when you take those wheels and put them on a custom Capricorn? Well it goes a little something like this:

Here’s a shot of the latest hot custom builds to come through Handspun: green ano Velocity Deep V’s, gold All City hubs, with black DT Competition spokes w/gold nipples- 3x rear, radial front. These wheels are being donated as the prize for Best Costume at the Track or Treat alleycat race coming up on Halloween night, right here in Minneapolis. The event is put on by our pals from Bike Jerks, who, despite their name are actually really nice guys.

These wheels can be yours for free - just show up with the best costume and you’re rolling on the green and gold.  For more details on the best event going down Halloween night, check out the flier on the Bike Jerks site, under the Blog section: http://www.bikejerks.com

Cross Vegas Represent

10.03.2008 • Posted by: David

If you were one of the lucky 15,000+ attendees at Cross Vegas last week you were treated to a great race with some of the biggest names in the sport. Through all of the excitement of Ryan Trebon’s victory and seeing Lance Armstrong hold his own in a ‘cross race, you may have missed one of the night’s highlights— Tony Cruz’s wheels. Luckily our good friend Christopher T. Smith from Time Sport USA was there with a camera to capture the action:

Handspun teamed up the guys at BMC to put together a pair of wheels suitable for such a high caliber event. The wheels that Tony is riding here are Easton EC90 carbon rims built on DT Swiss 240 hubs, with the new white Aerolite spokes- hand built by Handspun’s own Erick Kyllonen. These wheels looked fast standing still, and they helped Tony beat out Lance Armstrong in the final sprint to the line.  A big thanks to BMC, and to Tony for being the first pro to ride Handspun wheels. Congratulations on a great race!

Don’t call it a comeback.

Handspun is premiering a new limited production offering, just for cyclocross season: 32-hole Ultegra hubs on Velocity Escape tubular rims, built 3x with DT Competition spokes. Some are saying that tubulars are making a comeback, I’d say they never left. Check out the top cyclocross riders: the ones who have a choice in the matter choose tubulars. But what about those of us that have to actually pay for our equipment? All it takes to ride tubulars is a little commitment.  Some drawbacks of running tubulars include:

  • Buying a second set of pricey wheels
  • Limited utility—they normally only come out on race day
  • Gluing on your tires

Some benefits of running tubulars include:

  • Unparalleled ride quality and comfort
  • Improved cornering
  • In cyclocross, the ability to run extremely low pressure without fear of a pinch flat

Our new wheels can help you get the benefits of a hand-built tubular wheelset, while taking care of some of the unfortunate drawbacks.

  • Our new wheels are affordably priced—getting you into a set of tubulars without breaking the bank
  • While respectably light, these wheels are durable enough to be ridden more than just on race day. Built with DT spokes and nipples, these wheels are durable, and fully serviceable
  • As with all of our wheels, they are ready to ride right out of the box—hand-trued, stress relieved and tension checked
  • As for gluing the tires on, you’re on your own there—but check out Stu Thornes excellent tutorial at http://www.cyclocrossworld.com/ in the Tech section. It’s got everything you need

All you need to do is commit, and Handspun is there to help. We’re offering an affordable, durable, race worthy pair of wheels so you can ride PRO wheels without all of the drawbacks.
